Chennai: K. Annamalai, the president of the Bharatiya Janata Party in Tamil Nadu, has been given a 'Y' Scale security rating by the Ministry of Home Affairs. According to police sources, armed Personal Security Officers from the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) and the Security Branch CID of the State police will guard him around the clock. Maoists and religious extremists are allegedly threatening the former IPS officer of "Singham" fame.

The Union Home Ministry directed the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) to provide 'Y' security for Annamalai on Saturday. Three petrol bombs were thrown at the party's headquarters in Chennai in February of this year, prompting the move. "The CRPF is requested to give 'Y' category security cover to K Annamalai in Tamil Nadu, in addition to the security cover provided by the State Police, until further review," according to an official release.

In February of this year, three petrol bombs were thrown at the Tamil Nadu BJP headquarters, 'Kamalalayam,' in T Nagar, Chennai. Annamalai has urged that the National Investigation Agency (NIA) investigate the bombing occurrences as well as a bigger plot.  Karate Thiagarajan, a BJP leader in Tamil Nadu, blamed the Tamil Nadu government for the purported bombing at the state party office.

Annamalai, a former cop turned politician, was elected to lead the BJP's Tamil Nadu branch in July 2021. He was a former IPS officer from the Karnataka cadre who left the government service in August 2020 and joined the BJP.
