Chennai: The government of Tamil Nadu, which manages the Mullaperiyar dam although it is geographically in Kerala's Idukki district, will open the spillways at 7 a.m. on Friday. Kerala Water Resources Minister Roshy Augustine had earlier solicited the Tamil Nadu government to inform the state well in advance so that the evacuation process is smooth.

On Wednesday night, the Tamil Nadu Water Resources Department informed the Kerala government of the need for an evacuation in Idukki district in order to open the spillways. Following incessant rains in Mullaperiyar's catchment areas, the dam's spillways will be opened. At 9 p.m. on Wednesday, the dam's water level had reached 137.80 feet. The Central Water Commission (CWC) set a maximum water level of 138 feet in the dam, and the water level is expected to cross this rule curve by Thursday morning. On Wednesday, Tamil Nadu was drawing 2,300 cusecs of water from the dam, while the inflow was 5,800 cusecs.

Meanwhile, Kerala filed a petition in the Supreme Court on Wednesday, expressing its dissatisfaction with the Mullaperiyar dam supervisory committee's submission that there was no need to change the 142-foot water level set by the apex court. M.K. Stalin, the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, wrote a letter to his Kerala counterpart Pinarayi Vijayan on Wednesday night, stating that his state was monitoring the Mullaperiyar dam's situation and the water flow into it.
