CHENNAI: With urban local body polls in Tamil Nadu on February 19, the state BJP would want 30 percent of the total seats from the AIADMK. On Sunday, the parties will start splitting seats.

The BJP had demanded 30 percent seats in the nine rural local body elections held in October 2021, but it did not receive the necessary proportion of seats, and its performance in the local body elections was also below par.

According to BJP sources, the party would demand more seats, citing its four MLAs in the Assembly, and is expected to demand five corporation Mayor positions. The AIADMK has denied the allegations, and a senior party leader said that the party will only give the saffron party a maximum of 10 percent of the seats.

Meanwhile, state BJP poll in-charge and former Union minister Pon Radhakrishnan said the party would announce its candidates after January 31 and file nomination papers within the next few days. He stated that the saffron party is conducting candidate interviews and that state party President K. Annamalai would reveal the party's candidates.

However, at a party meeting convened at the state headquarters in Chennai on Friday evening, there were differing views on whether the BJP will fight the urban local body elections alone.
