Tamil Nadu: Voting for the Erode East Assembly by-poll started at Mahajana school, Agrahara street. The election for tightly-contested Erode East by-poll commenced at 7 am, Monday, February 27.

There are 77 people running for the coveted Assembly seat, representing all political ideologies.

Nonetheless, it appears that the contest will be closely contested between Thennarasu of the AIADMK and EVKS Elangovan of the Congress. Elangovan is running in the by election with support from the DMK, which is also the Congress' more significant coalition partner.

With the recent Supreme Court decision that permitted him to continue leading the AIADMK, the former chief minister of Tamil Nadu, Edappadi Palaniswami, has a chance to establish himself as a strong leader and confirm his control over the group if the Erode byelection results in his favour.

The Naam Tamizlar Katchi (NTK), the Desiya Morpokku Dravida Kazhagam (DMDK), and a number of other contenders are also vying for the coveted seat, giving the AIADMK a tough fight.

A total of 1,206 officers, 286 presiding officers, 858 polling officers and 62 additional officers, have been deployed for poll duty.  However, the AIADMK faces a stiff contest from the ruling DMK in the fight for the prized seat, with the Naam Tamizlar Katchi, the Desiya Morpokku Dravida Kazhagam and several others players also in fray.
