New Delhi: The Supreme Court has given 4 months' time to the Tamil Nadu State Election Commission (TNSEC) to conduct the election process in local urban bodies of the state. The State Election Commission had sought a stay from the court till April 2022 to prepare for the election process. A bench of Chief Justice (CJI) NV Ramana, Justice Surya Kant and Justice Hima Kohli issued directions seeking extension of time by the Commission to hold local body elections.

Senior advocate P Wilson agreed to seek a moratorium by the Election Commission. On this, CJI Ramana told him, 'Wilsonji, you filed for the election, now you want to postpone it.' In response, P Wilson said that 'everyone wants elections to local bodies.' He said the new government formed in May is trying to get it done at the earliest. P Wilson said there are more than 600 local urban bodies in the region. He said his petition was about a delay in delimitation and holding elections in local bodies of 9 new districts. He said the purpose of his petition was fulfilled.

Earlier, during the last hearing, the Election Commission had told the court that the process of local body elections in 9 new districts would be completed by October 12. The Commission had also said that preparations for holding elections in urban bodies of the state need a few months in view of the coronavirus situation.
