Chennai: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and DMK leader MK Stalin has strongly criticized the recent UPSC lateral entry recruitment scheme, calling it a direct attack on social justice. Stalin emphasized the need for a caste census to ensure fair distribution of opportunities for backward classes.
In a social media post on X, Stalin expressed his concerns, stating, "Lateral Entry undermines social justice by denying deserving SC, ST, OBC, and minority officers their rightful opportunities. The Union Government must stop this practice, address backlog vacancies for OBCs and SC/STs, and ensure fair promotions."
Stalin also demanded the abolition of the "creamy layer" concept, which he has long opposed. He urged for an immediate increase in the ceiling for the creamy layer, calling it essential for maintaining equitable opportunities.
Stalin also highlighted the importance of a nationwide caste census. He argued that such a census is crucial for ensuring that educational and job opportunities are fairly allocated to all backward and oppressed communities.
Union Minister Chirag Paswan, reacting to the UPSC scheme, echoed concerns about the lack of consideration for reservations. Paswan criticized the recruitment process, stating that his party disagrees with the direct recruitment for posts without considering reservations. He assured that his party would continue to advocate for adherence to reservation provisions in government appointments.
Paswan's comments have added weight to the opposition's criticism of the lateral entry scheme. On Monday, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi also condemned the move, accusing it of undermining reservations for Dalits, OBCs, and Adivasis. Gandhi labeled the scheme as a threat to the Constitution and reservations for marginalized groups.
The UPSC's recent call for applications for 45 mid-level positions through lateral entry has faced significant backlash from various political leaders and parties.
