Tamil Nadu: Counting of votes for urban local bodies underway

Coimbatore: Counting of ballots for Tamil Nadu's urban local body elections is taking place across the state. The Electronic Votic Machiens were delivered to the counting centres from strong rooms all around the state.

On Saturday, Tamil Nadu voters chose 12,607 candidates for positions in 21 corporations, 138 municipalities, and 490 town panchayats. The elections for urban local bodies were held in a single period.

Elections were set for October 2016, but were postponed due to a directive from the Madras High Court. Following that, a slew of political and administrative events added to the delay. There are 57,778 people running for 12,607 positions.

Meanwhile, on Tuesday, security was in place at counting booths throughout the Greater Chennai Corporation area. More than 7,000 police officers have been deployed to keep the peace in and around the city's counting centres.
