Tamil Nadu: DMK, AIADMK released election manifestos

On Tuesday, main opponents DMK and AIADMK were on the "same page" after releasing their election manifestos around the same day, when they guaranteed to exert pressure on the next government to release seven convicts in the Rajiv Gandhi death case and abolish NEET examinations for entrance into medical colleges.

Assuring to provide honest governance and secular administration to the people, DMK president M.K. Stalin on Tuesday released party’s manifesto for the Lok Sabha elections and by-elections to 18 Assembly constituencies in the State. DMK president Mr. Stalin said his party favors sharing of sixty percent of the total tax revenue with state governments. He said Employees Pension Scheme would be revamped so that its subscribers would get eight thousand rupees per month as the monthly pension after retirement.

He also said the old pension scheme for government employees would be restored. He promised actions for enhancing per capita income to one and a half lakh rupees. To unseat the ruling AIADMK government, the DMK has made constituency-wise promises for the Assembly constituencies for which by-elections will be held along with the Lok Sabha polls on April 18.

The AIADMK promise to implement a direct transfer scheme under the banner Amma National Poverty Eradication Initiative (ANPEI), which would ensure transfer of Rs 1,500 in the bank accounts of BPL families, destitute women, widows without income, differently-abled, landless agricultural labourers, rural and urban manual labourers and destitute senior citizens took the cake. The AIADMK also vowed steps to seek an international probe into the alleged war crimes during the civil war in Sri Lanka. The manifesto promises writing off of educational loans and interlinking of rivers to divert excess water to drought-prone areas.
