Chennai: Employees of the Tamil Nadu government anticipate the old pension programme to be reinstated. Following the declarations by the governments of Rajasthan and Chhattisgarh to restore the old pension scheme for state government employees, their Tamil Nadu counterparts are hoping that the DMK administration will follow through on its electoral promise to replace the New Pension Scheme.

In addition to the two states, Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Jai Ram Thakur has announced the formation of a committee to restore the previous pension programme, which will be chaired by the Chief Secretary.

"The new pension plan is completely incompatible with the needs of government employees. The government will gain nothing by resurrecting the old pension scheme, said P. Frederic Engels, State Coordinator of the Contributory Pension Scheme (CPS) Abolition Movement.

He further mentioned that some of the CPS's positive aspects were not implemented in Tamil Nadu. "In Tamil Nadu, the CPS does not provide gratuity on superannuation, and if a government employee dies while on the job, the CPS does not provide a family pension." "Only after realising all of this did the DMK promise to restore the previous pension scheme in its election manifestos in 2016, 2019, and 2021," he said.
