Chennai: The Tamil Nadu government has approved a Rs 3.60 crore budget for the construction of a drone police unit for the Greater Chennai Police Department.

The mobile drone police unit will be stationed at strategic locations to enable officers to respond quickly to people in crisis, monitor crime hotspots, and monitor VIP route surveillance, among other things. Each mobile drone police unit will have nine drones and be housed in a container cabin that will serve as a control room as well as a drone operation area.

The police have detected three different types of drones: (1) Special payload drone with quick response - high definition camera with thermal/night vision, live video streaming, loud speaker, continuous flying range of 2 kms, 30 minutes of flight time, and gross weight of 2.5 kg. (2) A long-range surveillance drone with a gross weight of five kilogrammes that can take off vertically and fly for 30 kilometres and 100 minutes. (3) A heavy-lifting lifeguard drone with a one-kilometer range and 15 minutes of continuous flight time.

For technical requirements, the government has asked the police to collaborate with Madras Institute of Technology academics who have worked on unmanned aerial vehicles in the Department of Aeronautics.
