Chennai: Environment department has directed the district administration to conduct surprise inspections in shops and establishments to ascertain the quantity of polythene covers being sold in the state. A total of 14 plastic items, including one-time use of plastic bags and polythene covers, were banned in the state of Tamil Nadu in 2019. The action of polythene cover has started in Salem district, the district administration has raided many shops and establishments.

District sources told IANS that seizures have been made from shops and small vendors who are using polythene bags in large numbers. Mohankumaran, an environmental activist and member of the Salem People's Movement, says that "unrestrained use of these plastic covers clogs the drainage system and clogs the water and we ask the government to impose heavy fines on those involved in such things." urge."

The sanitation department in the state has geared up to stop the use of polythene covers as well as plastic covered tea cups, plastic straws, plastic flags, earbuds and such items which are in daily use in the system. The state environment department has also directed the district administration in collaboration with district health department officials and police to conduct searches in local areas to check the use of polythene and plastic covers.
