CHENNAI: The Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Company (Tangedco) is working to generate 20000 MW of solar energy in the state over the next ten years, reducing the state's reliance on coal-fired power facilities.

The power company has already hired AECOM India, a private technical consulting firm, to provide a project report in four months.

AECOM India has already begun research on available land, substation locations, transformers, transmission lines, and power storage batteries.

According to Tangedco sources, power plants with a capacity of 4000 MW will be erected first, along with storage facilities. However, in the next ten years, the department plans to make a significant shift to solar power to lessen reliance on coal-based power, as environmental concerns grow.
