Former Assam Chief Minister and Congress leader Tarun Gogoi said that the National Register of Citizens (NRC) actually came with Congress. However, he also said that the last list of which came is full of flaws.

In an interview to the sources, Gogoi said, "This (NRC) is our child. We started it during Manmohan Singh's tenure. The purpose behind this was to identify who is foreign and who really is an Indian citizen. There was no such thing as linking to any religion. But the final list is published, it is full of flaws. Because of this, the future of 40 lakh people has become uncertain. This is not a small number. We want to improve it. "

He said that all Indian citizens should be protected and this should not be included in politics. He said that no one should try to divide it on this basis and no one should try to make it an issue of Hindu, Muslim or Christian. He said that people who have left the list should provide legal assistance. People of BJP are doing politics in this and trying to make this issue Hindu-Muslim

Gogoi said that there are a large number of Indian nationals in the people outside the list. It is difficult to say how many foreigners are there. According to the records, there are only 2.48 lakh people in Assam, who are doubtful of being Indian citizens. On the question that BJP wants to protect Bangladeshi Hindus, citizenship bill, 2014 has been passed to give citizenship to Bangladeshi Hindus, Gogoi said that they are against this discrimination.
