Tata Motors, which overtook Hyundai Motor as India's second largest automaker after decades, saw its stock climb substantially on Monday. The surge in stock price occurred after Tata Motors reported a roughly 50% increase in December sales compared to the same month the previous year.
On Monday, Tata Motors' stock increased by over 4%. On the BSE, the stock rose 3.59 percent to 499.70 rupees. It rose 3.60 percent to 499.80 on the NSE.

In December 2021, Tata Motors sold a total of 35,299 passenger automobiles. In the same month a year earlier, the company sold a total of 23,545 cars.

Overall passenger car sales in the third quarter were 99,002 units, up from 68,806 units in the same time the previous year, according to Tata Motors. It's a significant rise of approximately 44%.

"Tata Motors PV business development path continued and reached multiple new milestones throughout the quarter while suffering a shortage in production owing to the ongoing semi-conductor crisis," stated Shailesh Chandra, President of Tata Motors' Passenger Vehicles Business Unit.

Last week, Tata Motors hived off and transferred its entire passenger car business to Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles Limited. The automaker has previously stated that it intended to split its domestic PV business unit and sought a strategic alliance in order to do so.

The performance of Tata Motors' electric cars has been one of the most important parts of the company's emergence as an automaker. Tata Motors controls the bulk of the four-wheeler electric vehicle industry in India with just two models: Nexon EV and Tigor EV. "EV sales reached a record high of 5,592 units in Q3 FY22 (up 345 percent from Q3 FY21)," Chandra stated.

Tata Motors sold 10,000 electric vehicles in the first nine months of the current fiscal year. Tata Motors broke the 2,000 monthly EV sales barrier for the first time last month, selling 2,255 units.
