New Delhi: The government today made an official announcement for the new owner of state-run airline Air India. This was announced by the Secretary, Ministry of Civil Aviation and DIPAM during a press conference. The press conference said that Tata has bid the highest bid of Rs 18,000 crores for Air India, so Air India is being commanded by Tata Group.

Last week, sources reported that Air India was back in the hands of the Tata Group after 68 years. But the news was denied in an official tweet by the secretary of the DIPAM. Later, Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal had asked for the name of the new Air India owner to be announced at the right time at a press conference in Dubai.

Air India was founded by the TATA group in 1932. JRD Tata, himself a skilled pilot, started it as a Tata Airlines. Normal air services started from India after World War II and Air India was then made a public sector company. After the country's independence in 1947, the need for a national airline was felt and the Government of India acquired a 49 per cent stake in Air India.
