Teachers' Day is celebrated every year on 5 September in India. This day is considered very special. This day marks the birthday of Dr Sarvepalli Radhakrishna, the second President of the country, and on the occasion of that day, celebrates Teachers' Day. Sarvepalli Radhakrishna had made many important contributions in the field of education and with this, he worked for 40 years of his life.

He was a politician, scholar, and philosopher. He got many honours in his life. When his first book "The Philosophy of Rabindranath Tagore" came out in 1917, the world came to know the importance of philosophy of India. He was vice-chancellor of Andhra University from 1931-36 and between 1936-52 he taught at Oxford University. It is said that Dr Radhakrishnan was also the Vice-Chancellor of Banaras Hindu University for some time. He was given the honour of Knighthood in the year 1936 and Bharat Ratna in the year 1952. 

Once Dr Sarvepalli Radhakrishna's colleagues asked him to celebrate his birthday. During that time, he had expressed his wish that "If instead of celebrating my birthday, I will be happier if this day is celebrated as Teacher's Day". Since then, Radhakrishnan's birthday is being celebrated as Teachers' Day. After that, Teacher's Day is celebrated officially in India on 5 September 1962.
