CHENNAI: A 17-year-old football player who had to have his right leg amputated after undergoing surgery for a ligament tear seven days ago, died on Tuesday from multiple organ failure.

Priya (17), a B.Sc. (Physical Education) student, had ligament surgery on November 7 at the Government Peripheral Hospital in Periyar Nagar.

The compression bandage that was used to stop bleeding caused the girl's leg to stop receiving blood, which led to complications. The teenager's right leg had to be amputated on November 8 at the Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital (RGGGH) as the difficulties continued.

The football player was hospitalised in the RGGGH's intensive care unit, but she eventually suffered multiple organ failure and died on Tuesday morning, said Tamil Nadu's health minister Ma Subramanian.

Several others, including other football players, began to demonstrate in front of the mortuary at the Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital.

Speaking to the media, Subramanian announced the suspension of two doctors from the Government Peripheral Hospital due to malpractice.

He declared that the two doctors will be subject to legal action and that the health department will file a police report against them.
The family of Priya will also receive a subsidy of Rs. 10 lakh, and one member of the family would be given a job with the government, according to Subramanian.

The minister declared, "Strict action will be taken against those guilty. Her loss cannot be repaid." K. Annamalai, the head of the Tamil Nadu BJP, has expressed his condolences for the footballer's passing. He asked for Rs. 2 crore in compensation for the decedent's family.

He also wanted the assignment of a government position to a member of the deceased's family. The BJP spokesman further claimed that due to the DMK government's inefficiency, Tamil Nadu's health department had joined the list of other state agencies in disrepair.

TTV Dhinakarn, the leader of Amma Makkal Munnetra Kazhagam, also expressed his sorrow over the young footballer's loss. He claimed that the sudden death had stunned him. Additionally, he demanded that the government ensure that such occurrences never recur by offering the deceased's family adequate compensation.
