Telangana: 2 Road projects costing Rs573-Cr approved

NEW DELHI: Nitin Gadkari, the Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, announced on Thursday that a plan to widen the NH-163 between Hyderabad and Bhopalpattnam in Chhattisgarh from its current two lanes to four lanes with paved shoulders has been authorised, at an estimated cost of Rs.136.22 crore.

In Telangana's Mulugu district, the road length connects popular tourist destinations like Laknavaram Lake and Bogatha Waterfalls.  Gadkari wrote on a social media platform that the development of the road stretch would improve the inter-state connectivity between Telangana and Chhattisgarh. The construction of the stretch, he claimed, will enable the government have greater control over Left Wing Extremism (LWE) activities as Mulugu is a district that is afflicted by LWE.

The engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) method will cost Rs. 436.91 crore for the rehabilitation and upgrade of the 2-lane NH-167K stretch of the Hyderabad/Kalwakurthy-Nandyal/Tirupati/Chennai highway to 4-lane with paved shoulders, including the approaches of the iconic suspension bridge across the river Krishna between Nagarkurnool (Telangana) and Nandyal (Andhra Pradesh).

The Union minister said,  NH-167K will cut the distance between Hyderabad/Kalwakurthy and Nandyal/Tirupati/Chennai by around 80 km since after it is finished, some of the vehicle traffic that is currently using NH-44 will switch to NH-167K. Due to its proximity to the Nallamala forest range, he said that Nandyal is a significant trading hub for agricultural and forest products.

The sanctioned iconic bridge at Somasila, Kollapur  would be the gateway for both the Telugu States and would assist promote tourism,  Gadkari said.
