Hyderabad: The state's Chanshekhar Rao government, complying with an order of the Telangana High Court, said on Wednesday that it is illegal to bring camels in the state for any other purpose, including cutting of camels, and strict legal action will be taken against those who break the law.

A public interest litigation was filed in the Telangana High Court seeking a moratorium on the sacrifice of camels during the festival of Bakrid coming next month. After hearing this public interest court, while issuing an interim order, the court said that it is the responsibility of the state government to ensure that the camel is not killed in the name of tradition. In a press release issued by the state's Veterinary and Animal Husbandry Department, it was stated that there is a strict ban on bringing camels from other states in Telangana and no person in the state will kill camels.

It is said in the press release that any such violation will be filed and punished according to the law. The KCR government of Telangana also referred to the Rajasthan Camel (Prohibition of Slaughter and Temporary Displacement or Export Regulation) Act, 2015 which prohibits bringing camels from this western state.
