Hyderabad: Police raided betel shops in Kukatpally area on Saturday and seized gutkha and ganja as well as paper rolls used for wrapping ganja. The paper used in the ganja was destroyed and the paan shop owners were consulted. Although cases have been registered against them, they were told that they did not arrest them, considering it their first offense and warned them not to resell gutkha and ganja. Following the state government's decision to strictly eliminate the drug menace, police and excise officials have intensified raids at various places in the city.

In the same series, 4.9 kg of mephedrone worth Rs 2 crore was seized in another liquor prohibition and excise duty raid in Medchal and Nagarkurnool. Medchal Assistant Enforcement Commissioner, Chandraiah said that excise officials of the District Task Force (DTF) raided a place in Kukatpally and seized 5 grams of the drug. On questioning Pawan and Prashant Reddy, a cab driver, it was found that the medicine was provided by a person named Kanna Reddy. DTF arrested Kanna Reddy and raided Ibrahimpatnam and seized 921 grams of drugs.

On further investigation with the accused, the police arrested Ramakrishna Gaur at Nagarkurnool. About 4 kg of mephedrone was found in his car. However, the main suspects SK Reddy and B Hanumantha Reddy are absconding, police said. Special teams were formed to trace the suspects on a large scale, call records and bank accounts will be verified. He said the narcotics were meant to be supplied to the students and efforts are on to trace the persons who acted as the source for supplying the narcotics.
