Puducherry: Tension in villages as fishermen clash over banned fishing net

After confrontations amongst fishermen led to police opening fire in the air twice to bring the situation under control on Saturday, police officers have been deployed in two coastal villages of Puducherry.

Residents of Nallavadu and Veerampattnam fought over the usage of a forbidden fishing net, which might harm the fish and marine life on which they rely for their livelihood. On social media, videos of locals brandishing sticks and cops firing fire have gone viral. To bring the situation under control, police stated bullets were fired into the air. Fishermen from Veerampattnam recently met with Chief Minister N Rangasamy to express their displeasure with their Nallavadu colleagues' use of the prohibited fishing net, which they said had the approval of BJP MLA and Speaker R Selvam.

In Puducherry, Mr Rangasamy's NR Congress has a coalition government with BJP MLA and Speaker R Selvam.
