Tensions Escalate as Jordan Accuses Israel of Targeting Gaza Hospital

Tensions flare as Israel and Jordan clash over an alleged attack on a Gaza field hospital. The Jordanian military accuses Israeli forces of deliberately targeting their newly established hospital in Khan Younis, claiming that a tank blocked the entrance while the hospital and bunkers were fired upon. Israel, however, denies shelling the field hospital, asserting that they were engaged in a gunfight with nearby Hamas fighters.

In a statement on Friday, the Jordanian armed forces emphasized that this action was not a result of a clash with resistance factions but part of Israel's consistent approach to targeting hospitals in Gaza. Jordan claims it's the fourth deliberate targeting of its field hospitals in Gaza since the conflict began in October.

Despite a peace agreement signed in 1994, tensions persist between Jordan and Israel. Jordan set up its first field hospital in Gaza over a decade ago and established a second one in Khan Younis in November after an Israeli airstrike damaged its Gaza City facility. According to the Jordanian military, Israeli forces were aware of the hospital's location and the presence of staff in an adjacent concrete building.

Video footage released by Jordan's armed forces shows bullet holes in the concrete walls, shattered windows, and bloodstains on a bed. Jordan alleges that one injured medic was evacuated by air for treatment, and a patient at the hospital sustained shrapnel injuries. Israel denies the claim of substantial damage to the hospital.

The Jordanian military expresses frustration, stating that despite ongoing coordination with Israel and emphasis on not targeting Jordanian hospitals, Israeli forces persist in deliberately targeting medical facilities. This targeting of medical facilities violates international treaties, including the Geneva Convention, Jordan in its part said.;

The field hospital in Khan Younis has been crucial, treating between 400 and 1,000 cases daily since its establishment in November. The broader Israeli bombardment has inflicted damage or destruction on many of Gaza's hospitals and medical clinics.
