Srinagar: A terror attack on CRPF took place in the Chanapora area of Srinagar in the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir on Friday. Security forces deployed in the Chanapora area have been attacked by militants with grenades. One jawan was injured in the accident. Security forces are currently cordoning off the entire area.

Despite a 40 percent decline in the number of terror incidents in Jammu and Kashmir as compared to last year, the capital Srinagar has overtaken some districts in south Kashmir to become a new hub for terrorist activities in the last year. A security source said Srinagar alone recorded 16 terrorism-related incidents, which is 21 percent of the total 75 incidents in the Valley so far this year. With these figures, it has surpassed the traditional strongholds of terrorism like Pulwama, Anantnag, and Shopian.

Srinagar has the highest IED explosives recovered, three of the total 8 IEDs recovered so far are from Srinagar. Of the 75 terrorist incidents reported in the Valley this year, Srinagar recorded the highest number of 16 incidents (20 percent), a much higher number than in previous years (2019- 6 percent, 2005- 5 percent). However this year, the change in focus can be clearly seen. Security forces have assessed that the increased terror incidents in Srinagar are the result of a recruitment drive launched by the Front-the Resistance Front (TRF) of Pakistan-based terror group Lashkar-e-Taiba (LET).
