NEW DELHI: Tesla has picked two locations for its first Car showrooms in India. One in New Delhi and the other in Mumbai. This move is part of the company's plan to enter the world's third-largest car market, as reported by Reuters.

This decision comes just a week after Prime Minister Narendra Modi met Tesla CEO Elon Musk in the United States. Their discussion covered topics like space, technology, and mobility.

Showrooms in Key Business Hubs

Tesla has secured a space in Aerocity, near New Delhi’s international airport. This area is a prime location with top hotels, retail stores, and corporate offices.

In Mumbai, the company has chosen a spot in Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC), a major business and shopping hub close to the city’s airport.

Both showrooms will be around 5,000 square feet each. However, the company has not yet announced when they will open.

A source told Reuters that Tesla’s plan is to sell imported electric vehicles (EVs) in India, and these locations will serve as showrooms, not service centers. Tesla will run them directly.

Hiring for 13 Positions in India

Tesla has also started hiring in India. It recently posted job openings for 13 mid-level positions, including customer support specialists and business operations analysts.

These roles, listed on Tesla’s official website, are based in the Mumbai Suburban region. Some of the key positions include:

  • Service advisor
  • Parts advisor
  • Service technician
  • Sales & customer support
  • Store manager
  • Delivery operations specialist

Lower Import Taxes Encourage Tesla’s Entry

Tesla had delayed entering the Indian market earlier due to high import taxes. But recently, India cut the basic customs duty on premium cars priced above $40,000 from 110% to 70%, as per Bloomberg.

While India’s EV market is still small compared to China, it offers Tesla a new opportunity, especially as the company faces slowing sales globally. Last year, India recorded nearly 100,000 electric car sales, whereas China saw 11 million sales.

With these new developments, Tesla seems ready to finally make its long-awaited entry into India.
