Thailand's health authorities reported on Monday that the country's first case of the Omicron Covid variant had been detected.

The 35-year-old American visitor arrived in Thailand with a negative RT-PCR test after transiting through Dubai, but his on-arrival test was verified to be positive on December 1 and further testing confirmed the presence of the novel variant, according to source.

According to the Ministry, the traveller, who is presently being treated in a Bangkok hospital, was asymptomatic and had no high-risk interactions because he took strict precautions during his journey.

According to the Ministry of Health, Thailand reported 4,000 new Covid-19 cases and 22 deaths on Monday, bringing the overall number of infections to over 2.14 million and the total number of deaths to 20,966.
