Shashi Tharoor, a senior leader of the Congress party, criticized the upcoming consecration ceremony of the Ayodhya Ram temple, calling it a political move by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Tharoor stated that if Congress participates, it would be seen as a political choice rather than a personal one. Prominent Congress leaders, including national president Mallikarjun Kharge, former president Sonia Gandhi, and Leader of Opposition Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury, declined the invitation, labeling the event as a "BJP-RSS" affair. Tharoor emphasized that while party members are free to practice their faiths, attending a political event for an incomplete temple, whose construction is ongoing, seems strategically timed to benefit the ruling party.

Senior Congress leader Shashi Tharoor has explained why the Congress party will not be attending the Ayodhya Ram temple 'Pran Pratishtha' or consecration ceremony. Tharoor expressed his view that the event is being used by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) for political gain. He emphasized that if the Congress participates, it would be seen as a political choice rather than a personal one.

Notably, top Congress leaders, including national president Mallikarjun Kharge, former president Sonia Gandhi, and Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury, have declined the invitation to the grand Ram temple opening on January 22, labeling it as a "BJP-RSS" event.

Tharoor clarified the party's stance, stating, "Our party has members who follow various faiths, and they are free to practice them. Hindus in the party have the right to offer prayers to Ram Lalla. However, the party believes that participating in a political event for an incomplete temple, whose construction is still ongoing, could be strategically timed to benefit the political interests of the ruling party (BJP). If we participate, it will be perceived as a political choice rather than a personal one, and people need to understand this as well," he told reporters.
