The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) has distributed 225 iPads to the councilors, officials and the elected members in 2018 bought by the then ruling Congress-JDS government in spite of cash deficient situation. Upon the tenure end, 10 out of 198 councilors have returned their iPads. BBMP Council Secretary Hemanth wrote to the councilors reminding them to return the BBMP property in the next three days, so far 13 ipads were retuned.

The BBMP council violated the Karnataka Municipal Corporation Act and Transparency Act as the Council merely passed a resolution to buy the ipad at Rs 44,000 apiece and a total bill of Rs 1 crore, in 2018 and is handed to the councilors within 48 hours. A former senior councilor said we are unknown of returning the ipad at the end of our tenure. He asked BBMP,” What is the need to send the notice which treats them as a corrupt?” Instead they could have informed about the return.
The quick purchase and distribution was done to transfer the Palike into a paperless office but at the end it did not serve the intended purpose. The expensive gadgets did not teach majority of the councilors its usage. The state government recently approved increasing the number of wards to 243 which needs 45 more ipads. As councilors are not using the ipads in its way few officials feel it is a waste of money.
