New Delhi: Food Secretary Sudhanshu Pandey said on Friday that the Central government has no plans to extend the distribution of free rations through the Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Yojana (PMGKAY) beyond November 30 due to the economy's recovery and the OMSS policy's good disposal of foodgrains in the open market.

The Prime Minister's Garib Kalyan Yojana was announced in March 2020 to help people affected by Covid-19. The scheme was originally intended to run from April to June 2020, but it was later extended until November 30.

"Since the economy is improving, our “Open market sale scheme” (OMSS) foodgrain disposal has been exceptional this year." So there is no plan to extend PMGKAY," Pandey said during a press conference. The government provides free rations to 80 million ration card holders identified under the National Food Security Act under the PMGKAY (NFSA). The free ration is in addition to the subsidised grains that they receive through ration shops. Under the OMSS policy, the government has been giving rice and wheat to bulk consumers in order to improve domestic market availability and keep prices in check.
