Former Lieutenant Governor of RBI Urjit Patel is celebrating his birthday today. Urjit, born on 28 October 1963, earned a BA degree from the London School of Economics. He then went on to pursue an M Phil degree from Oxford University in 1986. Four years later, he earned a doctorate in economics from Yale University in 1990. He was made the Lieutenant Governor of RBI on 7 January 2013. In January 2016, he was given a three-year extension. He has also worked for Boston Consulting Group and Reliance Industries.
He was also an Advisor on Energy and Infrastructure Affairs at the Boston Consulting Group. The committee constituted under the chairmanship of Urjit Patel paved the way for the Monetary Policy Committee. Patel has been associated with the central bank and chaired the monetary policy department on 11 January 2013. Central bank governors Raghuram Rajan and Patel have previously worked for the International Monetary Fund in Washington.
Urjit has been an advisor to the Ministry of Energy and the Department of Economic Affairs, Ministry of Finance from the year 1998 to 2001. From 1995 to 1997, he worked as an RBI advisor on IMF deputation. During that time he advised the RBI on the banking sector reform and foreign exchange market. During that time he advised the RBI on banking sector reform and foreign exchange market. Patel has served on the board of directors of Gujarat Petroleum Limited and National Housing Bank. Patel has been on the board of directors of State Bank of India since February 2013.
