You will be surprised to know that there are two doorbells in this house, one towards the Netherlands and the other towards Belgium. A strip has been made and marked to show the border, to know which part is in the Netherlands and which is in Belgium. There is not only one house here, which falls in two countries. There are many shops, cafes and restaurants, which are in between the Netherlands and Belgium. Meaning that if you step in here, you will reach another country and you will not even know.

After the independence of Belgium in 1831, when the border between Netherlands and Belgium was being fixed, two villages of the two countries were in the middle. These villages are Barley-Nasso and Barley-Hartog. Since it was difficult to separate them, the governments of the two countries, by mutual agreement, formed a strip between the two villages and the borders of Netherlands and Belgium were marked. Barley-Nassau and Barley-Hartog now lie between both the Netherlands and Belgium. The most important thing here is that neither an army is seen on the border here nor there is any kind of security arrangement. People of both the villages do not even need a visa or passport to go to each other's country, whereas people here easily go from one country to another.
