Ahmedabad: Amul, the iconic dairy brand known for its tagline 'Taste of India', is set to make its international debut by introducing its range of fresh products in the United States for the first time.

Jayen Mehta, Managing Director of Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation (GCMMF), which operates Amul, announced the exciting development. Amul has partnered with Michigan Milk Producers Association, a 108-year-old dairy cooperative in the US, to launch its fresh milk products in the American market. The announcement was made during the association's annual meeting held on March 20 in Detroit.

This marks the first time that Amul's fresh product range will be available outside India, especially in a market like the United States with a significant Indian and Asian diaspora, as highlighted by Mr. Mehta.

The move aligns with Amul's vision to expand its brand globally, in line with the aspirations set forth by Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his attendance at Amul's golden jubilee celebrations.

Amul's success story is emblematic of its entrepreneurial spirit, making it one of the strongest dairy brands worldwide.

During the golden jubilee celebration, Prime Minister Modi lauded the journey of Amul, comparing it to a sapling planted by Gujarat farmers 50 years ago that has now grown into a towering tree.

With exports to over 50 countries, Amul boasts a vast network of 18,000 milk cooperative committees and 36,000 farmers, processing over 3.5 crore litres of milk per day.

India's dairy sector has undergone remarkable growth, with dairy cooperatives playing a pivotal role since the launch of Operation Flood. Today, India stands as the largest producer of milk globally, contributing approximately 21 percent to the total milk production worldwide.

The transformation of India's dairy sector began in the 1960s, transitioning from a milk-deficit nation heavily reliant on imports. The establishment of the National Dairy Development Board (NDDB) in 1965, under the leadership of Verghese Kurien, marked a turning point. Kurien, hailed as the "Father of White Revolution" in India, spearheaded Operation Flood, aimed at replicating the successful 'Anand pattern' of dairy cooperatives nationwide.

This initiative revolutionized the dairy landscape, facilitating the organization of milk cooperatives across the country, thereby ensuring the efficient procurement and distribution of milk to urban centers.
