Chandigarh: The Chandigarh administration has decided not to levy the Union Territory Goods and Services Tax (UTGST) on the film 'The Kashmir Files' in Chandigarh cinema multiplexes and theatres for the next four months. The order from the Chandigarh Excise and Taxation Department would be in effect for the next four months.

So far, eight states have deemed this film tax-free. In similar vein, it is now tax-free in Chandigarh as well. According to the decision issued by the UT administration on Sunday, individuals in Chandigarh would be able to view the film tax-free starting today, Monday.

In fact, there was a clamour in Chandigarh to make Kashmir files tax-free. As a result of the Administrator's order, the UT Excise and Taxation Department has waived the UTGST levied on this film. According to the guidelines, UTGST will not be charged to customers at movie theatres and multiplexes. These instructions are valid for four months.

This film, directed by Vivek Agnihotri, is causing quite a stir these days. Demonstrations are being staged in many cities in opposition to it, while there is a push in several states to make it tax-free. Many leaders fear that this film will exacerbate communal tensions and should thus be prohibited. Prime Minister Modi, on the other hand, has complimented the film and encouraged people to watch it. On the other hand, the film has surpassed the 100 crore mark.
