The Kerala Story, which got stuck in controversy, grossed well over Rs. 8 crore at the domestic box office. Sudipto Sen wrote and directed the picture, which was released in theaters on Friday. Adah Sharma, Yogita Bihani, Siddhi Idnani, and Sonia Balani play important roles in The Kerala Story.

Taran Adarsh, a film expert, took to Twitter on Saturday and tweeted, "#TheKeralaStory hits the ball out of the stadium… Takes a SMASHING START… Evening night shows witness solid occupancy… The Day 1 numbers are an EYE-OPENER for the entire industry… TERRIFIC weekend assured… Fri ₹ 8.03 cr. #India biz. #Boxoffice."

The film's trailer sparked controversy because it claimed that 32,000 females from the state went missing and ultimately joined the terrorist organisation ISIS. The Kerala Story became a matter of concern due to the overstated figures in the film's trailer. The Kerala High Court noted on Friday that the producers included a disclaimer with the video that expressly states that the film is a fictionalized and dramatized rendition of events and that the film does not claim authenticity or factuality of historical events.

Speaking about the film before of its premiere, Kerala theater owners remarked that despite the negative publicity, bookings remained ordinary. Suresh Shenoy, who owns eight theaters in Kochi, including the Shenoy's multiplex, told PTI, "We do not expect any kind of protests against the film. It is unlikely." He said that the film, which will be screened at the multiplex he owns, has received average bookings as expected from a "small Hindi film like this."
