Dhaka: A former military officer found guilty of killing the country's independence hero Sheikh Mujibur Rahman in Bangladesh has been hanged. Abdul Majid was hanged in Dhaka on Sunday after he rejected an apology request from the President this week. Majid was arrested on Tuesday after being absconding for 25 years.

Sheikh Mujib, the father of the current Prime Minister of Bangladesh Sheikh Hasina, was killed in a military coup in 1975 along with most of his family. Majid remained in Bangladesh since the coup, but he is said to have migrated to India in 1996 after Sheikh Hasina was elected PM. The Hasina government then overturned the law protecting Mujib's murderers from litigation, after which Majid and a dozen other military officers were sentenced to death in 1998.

The country's Supreme Court reinstated this conviction in 2009, after which five convicts were sentenced to death. Abdul Majid was arrested this week after returning to Bangladesh last month.
