The Little Mermaid has been one of the year's most anticipated pictures, and when it hits theaters on May 26, 2023, people all around the world will flock to see the live-action adaptation of the popular cartoon blockbuster.
Even while Disney has not officially declared whether or not there would be a sequel to The Little Mermaid 2, the first animated feature included both a sequel and a prequel, leaving fans speculating if the same would happen this time. Meanwhile, the film's director, Rob Marshall, who also produced it, has discussed its potential future.
He says, "I know there have been the prequels and sequels to the animated film – like, the straight-to-video kind of things, you know? It's a classic story that has a lot of characters and a lot of interesting stories. I do think it's right for certain things. But you have to see how a movie plays, and how it does... I think there's always opportunity to find stories within stories. That's always a wonderful thing."
About The Little Mermaid Melody, Ariel and Eric's daughter, is restricted from exploring the sea in the 2000 sequel to the 1989 film. Meanwhile, the film's prequel, released in 2008, followed the life of a young Ariel as she dealt with her mother's loss. The Little Mermaid was largely shot at Pinewood Studios in London, but certain scenes were also shot in Sardinia, Italy. The coronavirus epidemic also caused a delay in production.
