USA: According to a brand-new poll released on Monday, a resounding majority of Democrats are not thrilled about US President Joe Biden's plans to run for reelection in 2024.

Only 37% of Democrats say they want Biden to run for a second term, according to the Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research survey. This is a 15% decrease from the percentage recorded prior to the midterm elections in November.

Overall, only 22% of respondents who were adults thought that 80-year-old Joe Biden should run for another four-year term. Before the midterm elections, this was 29%.

According to the poll, the declining percentage of Democrats who support Biden's potential re-election bid appear to be based on the attitude held by younger voters.

The younger generation of Americans appear to have the least enthusiasm for Biden. 49% of respondents who were 45 or older thought the president should run again. However, only 23% of respondents under the age of 45 agreed.

According to AP, some respondents claimed that Biden's advanced age would impair his capacity to carry out his responsibilities, citing his cough, gait, and frequent public gaffes.

The most recent faux pas was made by Biden on Thursday at a White House event, when he boasted that "more than half the women in my administration are women."

When singing "Happy Birthday" to the daughter-in-law of civil rights legend Martin Luther King Jr. in January, Biden struggled to remember her name. He enquired about the whereabouts of Representative Jackie Walorski (R-Indiana), who had passed away in a car accident a month earlier, at a public event in September.

While Biden has repeatedly hinted that he intends to run for re-election, he has not yet officially announced his candidature, saying the final decision will depend on his health and discussions with his family.

Biden's primary opponent in the 2020 election, former US President Donald Trump, made his formal announcement to run in mid-November.
