Based on a statement from the World Health Organisation's s emergency committee, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, director-general of the WHO, stated at a virtual press meet from Geneva that the mpox epidemic no longer constitutes a global health emergency.

Tedros stated on Thursday that the multi-country mpox epidemic no longer qualifies as a public health emergency of international concern (PHEIC) after the emergency committee for the disease met on Wednesday. In July 2022, he had designated mpox as a PHEIC.

According to data released by the WHO, the number of reported new cases decreased during the last three months by approximately 90% compared to the preceding three months.

Tedros said, "mpox is no longer a global health emergency,"  As with Covid-19, he issued a warning, saying "the work is not finished." The virus still poses serious public health issues and continues to harm communities across the globe, notably in Africa, where transmission is still poorly understood, he said.

"While the mpox and COVID-19 emergencies are both over, the threat of resurgent waves remains for both," Tedros stated. Both viruses are still in circulation and are still killing (humans). Since the mpox outbreak last year, 111 countries have recorded a total of more than 87,000 cases and 140 fatalities, according to the WHO.

The World Health Organization is a specialized agency of the United Nations that is dedicated to promoting health, preventing diseases, and improving healthcare systems around the world. The WHO was established on April 7, 1948, and has its headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland.
