NEW DELHI: On March 30, Maria Grazia Chiuri, the current creative director of Christian Dior, will show the new collection at the Gateway of India, an arch memorial that was constructed in 1911 to honour a visit to the city by King George V and Queen Mary.
The tourist directorate of the Maharashtra government is helping to sponsor the event. In a statement, Dior claimed that Maria Grazia Chiuri views each collection as an occasion to forge new links between various fields of craftsmanship, ancestor traditions, and the most ground-breaking innovation.”
The French fashion brand has already conducted one of its runway presentations in a historical site. Dior relocated to Egypt for its autumn 2023 menswear presentation, showcasing 75 designs against a backdrop of the lit Pyramids of Giza.
The collection and show, dubbed Celestial, were motivated by a "fascination with the ancient world" and "how the past shapes the future or an image of the future from the past," according to Kim Jones, creative director for Dior Men. The palette of the collection included muted greys, taupe, and whites intermingled with splashes of vibrant yellow and orange, alluding to its North African setting.
The transition from drab tones to a "palette of the desert" with glimpses of a flaming sunset in between was described as a graduation by Jones. Models appeared like they were embarking on a sci-fi adventure to the moon or "galaxies far, far away", donning sunglasses, helmets, backpacks, utility boots and mosquito netting as a type of "futuristic armoury".
Formula One champion Sir Lewis Hamilton, British actor Robert Pattinson, Scottish actor Thomas Doherty, South Korean rapper and Dior Global Ambassador Oh Se-hun, Spanish actor Aron Piper, Colombian singer Manuel Turizo, and American model Amber Valletta were among the high-profile attendees at the event.
By the end of the month, Chiuri will undoubtedly try to recapture some of this magic in India.
