Recently, a peculiar incident has come to light in Brazil, where a man claims to be the real-life Mowgli. The individual, named Elsio Alves do Nascimento, asserts that he lived among animals after going missing in the jungle at the age of 8. According to him, a dispute with his brother over a toy on Christmas in 1978 led to him leaving home. Elsio narrates, "My father was very strict; he beat me with a whip, and I kept running until I fell into a river. I swam to the shore, but by then, I was lost."
Elsio, now 53 years old, reportedly attempted to return home but was unsuccessful. He spent a night in the jungle, constantly moving but unable to find his way out. Elsio describes how he survived by sleeping in caves during the rainy season and consuming roots, fruits, coconuts, water-dwelling insects, and cooked larvae from fallen wood. Facing encounters with dangerous jungle animals, including jaguars, he climbed trees and took refuge to protect himself. Elsio explains, "I understood that there was no way out from here. I didn't sleep on the ground; I always slept in trees."
In the present day, Elsio works as a lifeguard in the village of Baxio in the northeastern state of Bahia, Brazil. He was spotted by a farmer in the jungle at the age of 11 and subsequently rescued. However, the three years spent in the jungle have profoundly affected his life. His voice has become harsh due to living in the wilderness, and adapting to eating regular food upon returning took time. After falling ill, he had to go to the hospital. Elsio shares, "My relatives thought I was dead. They had stopped looking for me." Learning to live like a human again, he acquired cooking skills and even got married. He now has two daughters and four grandchildren. Living in the jungle, Elsio concludes, is not as easy as it might seem.
