World Sickle Cell Day is celebrated annually on June 19. The United Nations General Assembly has adopted a resolution on December 22, 2008, to recognize sickle cell disease as a public health problem.
The main point:- It is a genetic disease, in which red blood cells become sickle-shaped instead of spherical. A person suffering from this disease also needs frequent blood transfusions. The symptoms of this disease are as follows:
Difficulty in breathing
weak immunity
Having frequent infections
Low body development
Difficulty in seeing
Swelling in the hands and feet
What is Sickle Cell Disease (SCD)?: SCD is also the most prevalent inherited blood disorder or genetic red blood cell disorder. People with sickle cell disorders do not have enough healthy red blood cells that work to carry oxygen throughout the body. It is widespread among many tribal population groups in India. Several cost-effective interventions have reduced morbidity and mortality from SCD in India. However, access to scd care is limited in tribal areas. SCD is mainly prevalent in Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Chhattisgarh, western Odisha, eastern Gujarat and the Nilgiri hills of northern Tamil Nadu and Kerala.
