Varanasi: Professor Madhav Janardan of the Department of Theology of the Banaras Hindu University (BHU), located in Kashi, the city of Baba Vishwanath, has claimed that the ancient pillar found in the Vazukhana of the Gyanvapi Masjid is the Nandikeshwar Shivling. While talking to the media, Professor of the Department of Dharmashastra Mimamsa in BHU has told that according to the Kashi Khand of Skanda Purana, Nandi in the north direction of Gyanvapi and established by Nandikeshwar is revered. This Nandikeshwar protects the waters of Gyanvapi from the north.

The professor, while reading the verse by placing the Skanda Purana in front, explained that there is evidence of this in the 143rd verse of chapter 61 of Kashi Khand. It is mentioned in Skanda Purana that Nandikeshwar is situated on the north side of the river and the same Shivling has been found. He said that Nandikeshwar is in the north, he always protects the water of knowledge. By seeing Nandishvara north of Gyanvapi, one gets the title of Gana of Mahadev. It is mentioned in the third part of Kashi Khand of Skanda Purana.

According to him, the place where the Rajiya Masjid is located, is where the Jyotirlinga i.e. Adi Vishweshwar is present. If there is a survey inside that mosque, then perhaps the situation will be clear. In Skandapurand the place of Adi Vishweshwar is mentioned in the north direction from Gyanvapi and there is Rajiya Masjid. The linga that has been found could not be Vishweshwar, it could be Nandikeshwar.
