Guwahati: A cycle rally was organized in the state capital from Chandmari to Nehru Stadium to celebrate the birthday of the state's first Arjuna Awardee Bhogeshwar Barua as Sports Day. Sports and Youth Welfare Minister Bimal Bora flagged off this rally.

Earlier this week, the state government decided to induct international archery champion Sanaji Boro and international boxing champion Jamuna Boro as inspectors in the excise department. The cabinet had decided to hand over the appointment letters to both of them on the occasion of the Aptitude Sports Day (on Friday). Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma shared his reaction about the day on Twitter. He said that he hoped that the Sports Day, organized on the occasion of the birthday of Arjuna Awardee Bhogeshwar Barua, would encourage the youth towards sports and take the state to new heights in this field.

Bhogeshwar Barua, born on 3 September 1940, was the first Assamese to win gold in an international event. He won the gold medal in the Asian Games in 1966. He won a medal in the 800m race event of that Asian Games. He is the first Assamese to receive the Arjuna Award. In February, 2019, Sarbananda Sonowal had laid the foundation stone for the construction of a sports school named after Bhogeshwar Barua at Sarusajai Complex, Guwahati.
