The Supreme Court today is likely to give its judgement on the telecom companies plea against the Delhi High court order making it mandatory for cellular operators to compensate for call drops.

The penalty imposed by the TRAI in October last year mandated the companies to compensate their subscribers by Re 1 per call drop, with the penalty capped at Rs 3 a day.

The penalty was imposed on calls originating from the service provider and had come into force from January 1 this year on a six-month trial basis.

The judgment will be pronounced by Justice Nariman.

TRAI had earlier told the apex court that it will take action against the Telcos for call drops to protect the interest of consumers as these service providers are not willing to compensate them.

The regulatory body had told the court that it has to safeguard 100 crore telecom subscribers and if companies agree to compensate call drops with equal number of free calls to consumers without any pre-condition, then it is open to re-consider its directive on imposing the penalty on them.
