The Whale, Brendan Fraser's comeback movie, has had its world premiere at the 78th Venice Film Festival to a roaring ovation. In the Darren Aronofsky thriller, in which Fraser portrays a 600-pound gay man who is confined to a wheelchair, the actor reportedly became emotional as the picture earned a six-minute standing ovation after the credits rolled.

According to reports, Fraser sobbed as he saw how his movie was appreciated. Fraser's performance qualifies him as an Oscar contender, according to early festival reactions. During the standing ovation, Fraser and the director Aronofsky also had an emotional hug. Fraser then made a bow as the applause increased after the movie.

In the movie The Whale, performed by Sadie Sink of Stranger Things, Fraser plays a man who is severely obese and strives to maintain a relationship with his 17-year-old daughter. Ty Simpkins, Samantha Morton, and Hong Chau all appear in the movie in supporting roles. Brendan has a history in Hollywood, having been in popular series including The Mummy.

Fraser's first significant motion picture since 2013's direct-to-DVD action flick Breakout is The Whale. Brendan reportedly put on 50–300 pounds wearing a prosthetic outfit for his part in the Darren Aronofsky movie. Speaking about wearing the prosthetics, the actor during the press conference in Venice said, "I even felt a sense of vertigo at the end of the day when all the appliances were removed; it was like stepping off the dock onto a boat in Venice", via Variety.
