Gayatri Devi, the Rajmata of the former royal family of Jaipur in Rajasthan, was born on May 23, 1919, in London, the capital of Britain. Princess Gayatri Devi's father Rajkumar Jitendra Narayan was the younger brother of the Crown Prince of Behar (West Bengal), while her mother was Princess Indira Raje of Baroda. After studying first in Santiniketan, then in London and Switzerland, she got married to Maharaja Sawai Mansingh (II) of Jaipur.

Rajmata Gayatri Devi, once counted among the ten most beautiful women in the world by Vogue magazine, was also active in Siasat. He had the distinction of winning the elections from the Jaipur Lok Sabha seat with the highest majority in the entire country as a candidate of the Swatantra Party founded by Chakravarty Rajagopalachari in 1962. The credit for starting the first public school 'Maharani Gayatri Devi Public School' (MGD) in Jaipur in 1943 for the education of girls also goes to Maharani Gayatri Devi.

After this, she was elected as a member of the Lok Sabha by winning the elections of 1967 and 1971. But she also suffered in her political journey, when she was lodged in Delhi's Tihar Jail during the Emergency. Books on Gayatri Devi titled (A Princess Remembers) and (A Governments' Gateway) have been published in English. She passed away on July 29, 2009, at the age of 90, in Jaipur.
