Patna: Addressing a public meeting in Motihari, Bihar CM Nitish Kumar said that there will be no compromise on total prohibition in the state as liquor is a bad thing and destroys life. Here, he launched a state-wide social reform campaign against alcohol, dowry, and child marriage from Gandhi Maidan. Addressing the gathering, CM Nitish Kumar said that development becomes meaningless without social reforms. He recalled Karpoori Thakur and said that the first prohibition in the state took place in 1977. With the change in governance, the ban on liquor was lifted.

But the women demanded that prohibition be reimposed, so the ban was reimposed. This has benefited the people of Bihar manifold. The Nitish government had on April 5, 2016, banned the manufacture, trade, storage, transport, sale, and consumption of liquor in the state. There was also opposition but prohibition is still going on.

He said in a public meeting that we started prohibition in the state because alcohol is a bad thing. I know that most of the people in the State are in favor of prohibition. Mahatma Gandhi had said that alcohol destroys life. He said that some people always play mischief and they do things that go against our right steps. He also said strict action is being taken against those violating the prohibition law in the state. The CM also urged people in public to try to eradicate all kinds of addictions, especially women, including child marriage, social evils like dowry and alcohol consumption. He further said that he will only attend wedding events where invitation cards have been prominently written about not taking dowry.
