New Delhi: In view of the vote bank, all regional parties are continuously demanding the Central government to conduct an OBC census. It is another matter that the Central Government in the Supreme Court has made it clear that there will be no caste census. The Centre has told the apex court that caste-based census of backward classes is an administratively incurable work. At the same time, separating such information from the scope of the census is a 'cautious policy decision.'

The Centre's stand on the OBC census is also significant as a ten-party delegation from Bihar recently met PM Narendra Modi led by CM Nitish Kumar and demanded a caste-based census. According to the Centre's affidavit, the government has said that there are many mistakes and impurities in the Socio-Economic Caste Census (SECC) 2011. It is reported that the central government has filed this affidavit in the Supreme Court in response to a petition filed by Maharashtra. The Maharashtra government had filed a petition seeking publicity of the figures of SECC 2011 relating to Other Backward Classes (OBC) from the Centre and other concerned authorities saying that the data was not being provided even after all requests.

An affidavit filed by the Secretary, Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment said that the Centre had issued a notification in January last year detailing the information to be collected for census 2021, covering several areas including information relating to Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes, But it does not mention any other category of caste.
