New Delhi: Nepal and India on Wednesday agreed to allow the Mahakali river to flow into its original path. Officials have given information in this regard. They said the decision was taken during a meeting on the Nepal-India border at Dharchula in the Pithoragarh district of India, where both sides agreed to remove the temporary embankment and allow the river to flow on the natural path. They have informed that earlier there was tension in the area after India built a temporary embankment to divert the flow of the Mahakali river.

During a meeting between security officials of the two countries on Wednesday, the Indian side agreed to remove the debris of the temporary embankment within 10 days as requested by Nepal, Dharchula Long Chief District Officer Raj Upadhyay said. The Kali river flows between India and Nepal at Dharchula in the Pithoragarh district in Uttarakhand. The security wall being built by India on this river had raised fears in Nepal that the flow of the river could divert towards Nepal, causing floods.

A meeting of officials of both countries was held on Wednesday in Dharchula. In this meeting, Nepali official Longharaj Upadhyay said, "We have invited tenders for the work of removing the debris. The process of removing debris will start in 10 days. Nepal sent a diplomatic letter to India on Tuesday (December 6) following the dispute over the construction of the embankment.'' Sources in the Ministry of External Affairs have informed that a diplomatic letter was sent to India through the Indian Embassy.
