Bengaluru:The Greater Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) on May 16 has banned the sale of meat and operation of abattoirs within its border area in view of Buddha Purnima at Karnatak. According to data from the Greater Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike, there are around 3,000 licensed meat shops in the city.

Let me tell you that the issue of boycott of Muslim vendors selling halal meat by Hindutva organisations in April was in controversy. Bajrang Dal activists in Shivamogga district had assaulted a Muslim meat seller, in which 5 persons were arrested. Significantly, an order from the Animal Husbandry Department had come out stating that the animals are not being stoned before being killed, which is in a way a violation of rules.

Following this statement, the Karnataka Government had issued a notice asking the Bengaluru Mahanagar Palika to implement the animal-staining process in all abattoirs. At the same time, the Karnataka government's decision to make stunning compulsory was called stupid by the opposition. The auspicious muhurat of Buddha Purnima will be from 12.45 pm on Sunday, May 15 to 9.45 pm on Monday, May 16. Lord Buddha is worshipped on this day.
