Amid the rising price of onion, a government official has assured that consumers will get relief soon. A senior official of the Ministry of Consumer Affairs said that the importers have placed orders for importing onions and by the end of this month, one thousand tonnes of onions will come in the domestic market. During the past few months, onion prices have reached Rs 100 per kg in many markets including New Delhi-NCR. But after several steps of the government, its price has come down slightly. Nevertheless, it is selling up to Rs 60 per kg in most markets.

The official said that according to the information given by private traders, they have placed orders for import in a small amount. Of these, around 1,000 tonnes of onions will arrive by the end of this month, while the second shipment will be received next month. The government has already given relief in phytosanitization and fumigation processes till the end of December, for onion imports did not take long to reach the retail markets. The issue of onion availability has also been politically sensitive on the last few occasions.

Fears of production shrinking to 52 lakh tonnes: Food and Consumer Affairs Minister Ram Vilas Paswan on Tuesday expressed a lack of onion production. He said that onion production is expected to fall by 26 percent in the kharif and post-kharif season of 2019-20. According to him, onion production may fall to 52.06 lakh tonnes this season. On November 15 this year, the average price of onions across the country was Rs 60.38 per kg, compared to Rs 22.84 per kg on the same date last year.

In a written reply to the Lok Sabha, Paswan said that onion production is mainly in three seasons. These include Rabi (March-June), Kharif (October-December) and Kharif-Baad (January-March). Any onion that comes in the market from July to October is stored during the Rabi season. During the current year, onion sowing saw a delay of three to four weeks.
